What is Quadball?

Quadball is the only full-contact, mixed-gender sport in the world, and welcomes trans and non-binary players.

We celebrate the inclusion of those from the LGBTQ+ communities, and greatly encourage anyone from any background to take part it in our sport.

The History

Quadball was founded at Middlebury College in the United States in 2005 by Xander Manshel and Alex Benepe, inspired by the sport of Quidditch. It is a mixed-gender contact sport with a unique mix of elements from handball, rugby, dodgeball, and tag.

Since 2005, quadball has moved away from it's original Harry Potter roots, and is now a full fledged sport in its own right with a distinct community and identity built entirely around it.

Today, quadball is played by thousands of athletes around the globe, with local, regional, national, and international tournaments taking place every year.

Whether you're brand new to sport, an experienced athlete, or just a passionate fan of the game or the books - there's a quadball club for anyone.

The Game

  • A Quadball team consists of a roster of up to 21 athletes, with seven players per team on the field.

  • Players on each team compete to outscore their opponents by scoring the volleyball through one of the opposition hoops, defending their own hoops with tackles and dodgeballs, and catching the flag to win the game.

  • A stick is held between players' legs at all times. The stick adds a layer of skill and complexity to the sport, through a handicap which works the same way you must pass a ball backwards in rugby, or can only kick the ball in football.

  • Two-armed wraps and tackles are allowed against players of the same position who are in possession of a ball. Contact above the shoulders, below the knee, and egregious contact like kicking, tripping or spear tackles are not legal.

The Positions

During the game, each team fields seven players, with rolling substitutions happening throughout the match.

The on-field team consists of:

an OUQC Keeper faces down Southampton

Chasers and Keepers

Three Chasers, wearing white headbands.

One Keeper, wearing a green headband.

Their job is to put the Volleyball through one of the opposition's three hoops, while defending their own hoops.

Each hoop is worth 10 points.

Chasers and keepers are only allowed to wrap, tackle or physically interact with other chasers or keepers.

Welsh Beater

Beaters

Two Beaters, wearing black headbands, throw Dodgeballs to beat opposing players.

When a player is hit by an opposing Dodgeball they are beat and must dismount their stick and run back to their hoops before they can re-join the game.

Beaters play a tactical role, influencing the other positions.

Beaters are only allowed to wrap, tackle or physically interact with other beaters, but their dodgeballs can be used against any opposing players.

Team England seeker leaps to pull the flag from a defending flag runner

Seekers and the Flag

One Seeker, wearing a yellow headband.

They attempt to catch the Flag, a tail attached to the back of a Flag Runner; an impartial official dressed in yellow who uses physicality and evasion to prevent the Seekers from catching.

Catching the Flag is worth 30 points and ends the game.

The Equipment

Sticks

Sticks serve as a player handicap and must be used by all players at all times on pitch.

All passing, scoring, tackling, and seeking must be done with a stick between your legs.

When a player is struck by a Dodgeball or taken off their stick by another player, they must go back and touch their own hoops before re-joining the game.

Hoops

Three Hoops stand at each end of the pitch.

Chasers and Keepers can score a goal by throwing or driving the Volleyball through any of the hoops from either side.

Each goal is worth 10 points.

Volleyball and Dodgeballs

Every game has One Volleyball and Three Dodgeballs.

Volleyballs are Soft Touch and slightly deflated, while Dodgeballs are size 8.5 rubber dodgeballs.

At the start of the game, the volleyball and dodgeballs are positioned throughout the field.

The Referee blows their whistle and the teams race onto the pitch to begin the match.
