With Northern and Southern Cup less than 2 months away, we’re releasing important information regarding our regional tournaments requirements.
Registration Process
Clubs can now register for Southern or Northern Cup by emailing events@quidditchuk.org.
Clubs must provide:
Number of Teams Attending
Names of Teams Attending
Number of Players attending in each Team
Names of Players Attending in each Team
Names of Speaking Captains for each Team
Official Volunteers (Names & Positions) being contributed by each Team
Teams should submit this information in spreadsheet format if possible.
QuidditchUK will invoice clubs the full team AND player fees which must be paid prior to the tournament registration deadline.
Regional Prices are as follows:
Team Fee – £30 Per Team
Player Fee – £20 Per Player
Individuals are responsible for their own registration as a QuidditchUK member.
The registration cutoff for both Northern and Southern Cup is 11:59pm on Friday, October 26th 2018.
Clubs, Teams, and Players must be fully registered with QuidditchUK as members AND registered as tournament participants by this date.
This date applies to all Clubs, Teams, Players and Officials.
Individuals and Clubs who are struggling to meet this deadline are required to get in touch with QuidditchUK to inform us of any delays or issues they are having with registering on time.
Clubs and Individuals that do not meet this deadline will not be eligible to compete at either Southern or Northern Cup 2018.
Tournament Committee
Tournament Committee positions are now open and can be found the Volunteers Page of the QuidditchUK website.
We need dedicated committee members to make our events a success, so please take a look at the page and see how you could contribute.
Tournament Format
With the exact number of teams at each regional still unknown, some elements of the tournament format cannot be confirmed at this stage. This includes the number and size of pools, the structure of the Consolation Bracket and the playoffs for British Quidditch Cup places. These details will be released shortly after the regionals registration deadline, along with the pool draws.
Day 1 – Pool play
Prior to the draw, teams will be divided into three pods, determined by the team’s ranking at BQC 2018 and the number of pools in the tournament. Where n is the number of pools, the top n ranked teams will be put into Pod 1, the next nranked teams will be put into Pod 2, and the remainder of the teams will be put into Pod 3. Teams that did not compete at BQC 2018 will automatically be put into Pod 3.
For example, at a 4-pool tournament, the top 4 ranked teams would be put into Pod 1 (first seeds), teams ranked 5-8 would be put into Pod 2, and the remainder of the teams would be put into Pod 3.
Teams from Pod 1 will be drawn randomly into pools. Once all pools have a first seed, teams from Pod 2 will be drawn randomly into pools. The remaining teams in each pool will be drawn randomly from Pod 3.
At the end of pool play, teams will be ranked based on the below criteria:
- Select as appropriate:
1a. For Ranking Intra-Group: Number of Wins
1b. For Ranking Inter-Group: Group Position
1c. For Final Rankings: Stage of Elimination - Highest Quaffle Point Differential (QPD), with a maximum of 90 QPD able to be accumulated from any single game
- Head to Head (where applicable)
- Number of Winning Snitch Catches
- Lowest Total Regulation Time Played
- Fewest Red Cards
- Fewest Yellow Cards
- Fewest Blue Cards
- Coin toss
QuidditchUK are aware that it was previously stated Day 1 of Regionals would be operated on a Swiss Format. This was an error due to an internal communication issue. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.
Day 2 – Bracket play
The top 20 ranked teams will advance to the upper bracket, with a first round bye for teams ranked 1-12. The structure of a lower bracket will be determined after all teams have registered for regionals.
European Qualifier places
The top 5 Northern teams and top 7 Southern teams will earn places for the European Qualifier tournament. Playoffs will be held for these positions.
BQC qualification
The number of BQC places allocated to each region will, as in previous years, be determined by the number of teams that compete at each regional.
Playoffs will, wherever possible, be held to determine the rankings that affect BQC qualification via regionals. In the event that it is not possible to hold playoffs for these positions, the ranking criteria outlined above will be used to determine final tournament ranking (and therefore BQC qualification). Note that two of the total 32 BQC places are reserved for qualification via Development Cup.
The formula is as follows
Northern BQC Spots = 30 * (TeamsNorth ÷(TeamsSouth+TeamsNorth))
Southern BQC Spots = 30 * (TeamsSouth ÷(TeamsSouth+TeamsNorth))
Playoff priority
It is QuidditchUK’s aim to hold playoffs for all positions that will determine tournament medals and qualification for any future tournament. However, in the event that it is not possible to accommodate all the matches required, the following priority will be in effect:
- Final
- 3rd place playoff
- EQT qualification (5th/6th at Northern, 7th/8th at Southern)
- BQC qualification
- EQT seeding (5th/6th at Southern)
- Top 8 ranking (7th/8th at Northern)
Volunteer Requirements
QuidditchUK has set volunteer requirements for Southern and Northern Cup.
This is outlined in the QuidditchUK Event Referee Quota Policy on our website, please ensure you and your club are familiar with the volunteer requirements.
The International Quidditch Association has released their referee tests for the 2018/2020 Rulebook. You can register to take the referee tests at iqareferees.org
If you or your club are struggling to reach these quotas, please contact gameplay@quidditchuk.org
Clubs that do not make their volunteer quota will not be eligible to compete at either Northern or Southern Cup 2018.
Artificial Surfaces
Both Northern and Southern Cup will feature and utilise artificial playing surfaces throughout the weekend.
Metal Studs will not be permitted on the artificial surfaces, please ensure your players have plastic moulded studs or trainers for these tournaments.
